Beyond Routine Care: The Value of the Global Dental A&E Scheme

When dental practice owners consider introducing a dental plan, the conversation often focuses on the benefits of regular attendance, preventive care, patient retention and predictable recurring income.

However, a dental plan can also provide additional value for patients when the unexpected happens.

Patients registered on a dental plan administered by Patient Plan Direct can benefit from access to the discretionary Global Dental Accident and Emergency Scheme (GDS). From dental accidents and emergency treatment away from home to hospitalisation and mouth cancer diagnosis, the scheme can provide valuable financial support to eligible patients during unforeseen and difficult times.

A lifeline for patients when the unexpected happens

The circumstances behind GDS support requests vary considerably. But dental accidents account for a large proportion of financial support submissions, with payouts often given to help cover dental treatment following unexpected incidents.

Herein are various examples of patients accessing support following an accident since January 2026 to date. Over the course of the schemes existence there have been hundreds of similar scenarios where patients have been extremely grateful an A&E cover has been accessible. It’s worth noting too that in these instances patients accessed treatment at their own practice, resulting in additional revenue to our client practices.

  • One patient was struck in the face by a tree branch while gardening, resulting in the loss of a crown and the remaining tooth. The proposed treatment involved an implant bridge, with the patient receiving £5,411through GDS.
  • Another patient was accidentally elbowed in the face, fracturing a tooth and loosening an existing bridge. The treatment plan thereafter involved implants and an eight-unit bridge. The patient received £12,405 towards the cost of treatment.
  • In a separate case, a patient tripped and fell while walking, damaging their teeth and requiring emergency treatment, an extraction and restorative care. They received £8,020 through the scheme.

These examples demonstrate how quickly an unexpected dental accident can lead to extensive treatment and significant costs for a patient. The GDS benefit can help ensure that the impact of a traumatic dental event doesn’t put financial pressure on the patient.

Support when patients are away from home

Dental emergencies do not always occur near a patient’s regular dental practice. GDS often supports patients who have required emergency dental treatment while travelling abroad.

One patient needed treatment while visiting the USA, including an extraction, bone graft, X-rays and antibiotics, and received £620.90. Another required dental treatment while in Italy and received £366.05.

For patients who travel regularly, knowing they can access support when emergency dental treatment is needed away from home can reinforce the added value of being a member of a dental plan.

Providing support following a mouth cancer diagnosis

The scheme can also provide financial support following a mouth cancer diagnosis, which is becoming increasingly common in the UK. Each year, 10,825 new cases are diagnosed across the country*.

In 2026 to date, there have been eight patients who have each received a £2,500 payment following a mouth cancer diagnosis (and it’s worth noting there are more claims for mouth cancer that are being reviewed by the GDS team). Out of those eight, three have also been eligible to claim for an overnight hospital stay, which is further compensation during this difficult time.

While no financial payment can lessen the impact of a serious diagnosis like mouth cancer, receiving additional financial support during the time when a diagnosis comes out of the blue, demonstrates how the benefits associated with a dental plan can extend beyond routine dental care.

Adding meaningful value to your dental plan

For practice owners, introducing a dental plan is about creating a more cost-effective way for patients to pay for their oral care. Manageable monthly payments give patients access to regular private dental appointments that support a preventive approach and help ensure that any oral health issues are identified early. The discretionary Global Dental A&E Scheme provides an additional layer of value and care.

The length of time patients had been on a dental plan before submitting a claim and benefiting from GDS varies considerably, from less than a year to several years on a dental plan. In many cases, the financial assistance they received was unexpected and far greater than they had hoped.

It is a powerful reminder that the value of a dental plan is not always measured solely by the routine care a patient receives in practice. Sometimes, its value becomes clearest when the unexpected happens and the right and just support is given.
