Thomas & Stroud

Practice owners and Principals, Dr Gareth Thomas and Dr Robert Stroud, who took ownership of the practice 15 years ago, made the difficult decision to transition away from NHS dentistry and move towards a private, membership-based dental plan model with the support of Patient Plan Direct.

Access to NHS dentistry in Wales has come under significant pressure in recent years, prompting many dental practices to reassess how they can continue to provide high-quality, sustainable patient care. For Thomas & Stroud Dental Surgery, the decision to leave NHS dentistry was driven primarily by the financial challenges affecting the sector.

Despite concerns about how loyal patients would respond — including multiple generations of the same families who had attended the practice for decades — the transition has been a major success. Through a flexible, affordable dental membership plan, the practice has already converted more than 2,500 former NHS patients to a private dental plan.

The move has also enabled the practice to invest in advanced dental technology and plan for future equipment upgrades, thereby enhancing the range and quality of treatments available to patients.

As more dental practices across Wales consider reducing or withdrawing from NHS commitments, Patient Plan Direct remains committed to helping practices build a sustainable future while ensuring private dental care remains accessible and affordable for patients seeking long-term oral healthcare solutions.

Principals Gareth and Robert created a sustainable future for their practice beyond NHS dentistry while continuing to provide accessible, high-quality patient care. Click below to watch their video testimonial.
